Why formative evaluation of students

Evaluating students performance and progression in an informal way and on an ongoing basis is the way to combine learning activities and feedback. Formative evaluation methods can inform teachers and students of students' learning gaps regarding the intended learning outcomes, and will help and motivate students to focus own effort. Formative evaluation can also help students become self conscience of own learning strategies and thereby help them become reflective learners. The feedback has to have a format that indicates action points for the student.

Formative evaluation can be made as

  • teacher evaluation of students
  • student self evaluation (tests or quizzes)
  • peer evaluation
